Generation Z and Millennials are known for their short attention spans and the need for constant stimulation to stay focused. Growing up in a digital world has accustomed them to hyperconnectivity, leading them to prefer an open office layout that allows them to stay attuned to all activities in the workspace. Unique office environments that prioritize experiences, incorporating playful or innovative elements, help keep them productive by providing the stimulation they thrive on.
In contrast, Generation X often prefers a more traditional office setup with private spaces. While playful office features are less significant to them, they value a work environment that offers the freedom to approach their tasks in their own way. Private spaces provide a retreat where they can work independently and concentrate without distractions. So, which generation should you prioritize when designing your office space? According to generational expert Aart Bontekoning, the key lies in giving both younger and older generations a sense of influence over their work environment. “Giving too much influence to one generation sparks resistance. ‘What about us?’ they might say or think.” Striking a balance where all generations feel heard and involved is essential.
Generation Z grew up in a digital era, making them highly skilled with technology but also leading to specific expectations in this area. While adopting the latest software and tools may seem innovative for many companies, Generation Z views it as the norm. Moreover, this generation is more sensitive than previous ones to wasting time and energy. According to generational expert Aart Bontekoning, it’s important not to make decisions for young employees but with them. “Let them take the lead in designing a digital infrastructure, supported by experienced IT professionals backing them up,” he suggests.
Bontekoning also notes that younger generations are often the first to explore whether technological innovations are effective. Once these innovations prove successful, older generations tend to adopt them over time. However, he emphasizes that for many in the growing 50+ demographic, automation should not be overly complex. A mindset of “they just need to keep up” often leads to discomfort and stress. His advice is to involve older employees early on, asking for their input and testing whether they find new systems easy and beneficial. After all, experience is just as important as innovation.
Nevertheless, differing perspectives can sometimes cause tension in the workplace. Older generations may see the emphasis on diversity as excessive, while younger employees may feel their older colleagues are too slow to embrace change. Bontekoning highlights that being open to diverse perspectives not only creates a more inclusive work environment but also fosters innovation. When employees are surrounded by a variety of ideas and backgrounds, they are better equipped to develop new approaches and solutions that might not otherwise emerge.
Millennials prefer workplaces that enable a seamless integration of work and personal life. As an ambitious generation, they often work long hours, leaving less time for daily personal tasks. Consequently, they highly value work environments with time-saving facilities, such as gyms, supermarkets, hair salons, package delivery points, or restaurants. For Generation Z, these facilities have also become an expectation. However, they tend to make less use of practical amenities since they avoid overtime work. Instead, they prioritize facilities that foster social interactions, such as nearby cafés, restaurants, and gyms.
